YouTube Explores Use of NFTs for Content Creators

YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki said Tuesday that YouTube is exploring features for video creators to take advantage of non-fungible tokens (NFTs), becoming the latest technology company to capitalize on the digital holding craze that swept past year.

"We have always been focused on expanding the YouTube ecosystem to help creators take advantage of emerging technologies, including things like NFT, while continuing to strengthen and enhance the experiences that YouTube creators and fans have," said Susan Wojcicki.

NFTs are a type of digital asset found in the blockchain for record keeping technology. They've seen a surge in popularity over the past year, as people have been buying featured artwork and videos from sports like NFTs. Sales of NFTs reached about $25 billion in 2021, according to data from market tracker DappRadar, although there were signs of slower growth toward the end of the year.

And last week, Twitter announced the launch of a tool where users can view NFTs as hex profile pictures. The Financial Times reported this month that Meta has been working on ways to allow users to create and sell NFTs on Facebook and Instagram, and TikTok and Reddit have gone the same way.
