Apple plans to use its own 5G modem in IPhone 2022
Apple is seeking a 5G modem to support its iPhone in less than three years for use on iPhones by 2022, which may seem very difficult given all the development, testing and certification work involved.
It is widely known at this point that Apple is moving to launch a phone supporting iPhone 5G next year, and perhaps all models of the new three iPhone may support 5G networks, but iPhone 2020 will use modems from the chip maker Qualcomm.
Apple bought the Intel modem sector earlier this year in a $ 1 billion deal in an effort to develop another piece of its hardware internally without relying on partners and the speed of their R&D.
Qualcomm is the current supplier of Apple chips, which has promised to offer 5G modems for iPhone next year, but given their past court disputes over licenses and malpractice, Apple wants to continue on its own.
This may be part of the reason Apple's management relies on its San Diego-based R&D team for wireless modems and chipsets to deliver the 5G modem urgently.
The information revealed that the use of the modem in 2022 devices is an optimistic goal.If the company can manufacture the modem in time, there must be time for testing, optimization and certification to ensure compliance with global standards, as well as the local FCC.
All current iPhones feature a system on the SoC chip - which includes the CPU, GPU, RAM and other silicon keys - as well as a separate modem chip.
The iPhone manufacturer wants to have a built-in 5G modem on the SoC chip to reduce power consumption, but both components are likely to be made separately for the iPhone 2022, while the integrated platform will only arrive in 2023.
Samsung unveiled the Exynos 980 processor with a built-in 5G modem in August, which will appear in smartphones released at the end of the year, while Huawei sells Mate 30 5G and Mate 30 Pro 5G with the Kirin 990 5G chip.
