The New York Times Buys Wordle

Wordle, the popular word guessing game developed by Josh Wardle, has a new owner. The New York Times Company bought it from its creator for an amount "a little more than seven figures".

The New York Times buys Wordle

The New York Times announced its acquisition of Wordle. This joins other popular games from NYT Games such as Spelling Bee, a game that quickly became a hit. Remember that in 2011 the American newspaper changed its business model to paywall. This means that most of the New York Times' editorial content as well as its additional products can only be accessed through a subscription.

Josh Wardle, the game's creator, said New York Times games played a big role in Wordle's origins, especially during the pandemic. "That's why this move (selling the game to the company) seems so natural to me," he said.

The game acquisition price has not been revealed but according to Insider it is in the 7 digits range.

Wordle was created for the public in October of last year and went from 90 players in November to 300,000 just two months later.

Wordle has become a phenomenon in these times, as its popularity has not stopped growing this year. As we have already explained in detail, it is basically a word guessing game in a crossword format that works directly from the web.

Wordle has a sharing feature. The game spreads a grid of colored blocks to show how good (or poorly) you are in the game depending on the correct letters obtained.

In an interview, Wardle mentioned that this sharing function can be very useful during the social isolation of a pandemic.

Sharing the results, he said, is "a way for people to connect with friends and family they might not otherwise see, and this really easy way to connect with others."
