Meta threatens to close Facebook and Instagram: reports

It seems that Meta, the parent company of the most important social networking site in the world, Facebook, along with Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger and others, is facing real problems, as the media indicate that the company may have to stop the Facebook and Instagram services in the European continent.

According to Mashable, it is related to the annual report of the European Union's Securities and Exchange Commission, and the dispute is European data regulations that prevent Meta from ingesting Europeans' data on American servers. Essentially, while Meta says the ability to process user data between countries is critical to its business operationally and for ad targeting.

European laws that aim to protect user privacy by keeping users' data within the jurisdiction of the European Union have superseded previous regulations. So, since Meta hasn't been able to access new data-sharing agreements, it threatens to drive away from the continent with Facebook and Instagram.

“If we are unable to transfer data between the countries and regions in which we operate, or if the sharing of data between our products and services is restricted, it may affect our ability to provide our services, the way we provide our services or our ability to target ads.” After that, Meta makes it clear that it believes it will be able to reach new agreements in 2022, but if that does not happen, "it is likely that we will not be able to offer a number of our most important products and services, including Facebook and Instagram, in Europe."
