On the sidelines of the CES 2020 exhibition, the French consumer appliance company Withings showcased a new hybrid smart watch called ScanWatch that competes with wearable medical devices by combining two health-monitoring technologies.
The watch is characterized by being able to perform an electrocardiogram (ECG) to check the pulse and electrical activity of the heart and detect the condition of atrial fibrillation, and it also measures the levels of oxygen in the blood during sleep to monitor sleep apnea through SpO2 sensors.
The ScanWatch watch sends light through the blood vessels in the wrist to measure the amount of oxygen in the blood. Monitoring the oxygen levels helps detect low oxygen attacks that occur with sleep apnea, and the oxygen readings in the blood are also combined with other data about sleep, such as the duration and quality of sleep .
Diagnosis of this condition currently requires a sleep study, which includes monitoring the respiratory rate, heart rate and brain activity, as well as oxygen levels, but some research may indicate that the oxygen levels tracked in the wrist may act as a primary alert for sleep apnea.
The watch also has a heart rate monitor to determine irregular heartbeats, including atrial fibrillation, and in case of an anomaly, the watch alerts the wearer and asks him to perform an electrocardiogram, which measures the electrical activity of the heart by touching the sensors on The watch screen, and reading will then be available on the Health Mate app and on the watch itself.
The company first introduced the electrocardiogram feature in the Move ECG watch it announced last year, and this watch comes with a permit to sell in Europe, but it is still awaiting FDA approval, and is not available for sale in the United States.
The watch has a small PMOLED screen to display the number of steps, sleep marks, calories, distance and heart rate, as well as watching smartphone alerts, while the digital crown allows users to record ECG and SpO2 measurements, start exercises and set alarms.
Withings said in a press release: ScanWatch will be available for sale in the second quarter of 2020 for $ 249 for the 38mm version or $ 299 for the 42mm version.
