Users can now control what appears in the navigation bar of Facebook with a new option called Shortcut Bar Settings, including whether they display red alert points.
The social media app is usually filled with red dots that appear on different parts of the app whenever something new is posted, and for most people, they appear in random places where the user doesn't care too much, leading to an overwhelming alert.
Users who are not interested in new alerts from the Marketplace can, for example, disable them completely.
The option to remove specific tabs includes Marketplace, Groups, Events, Profile, Friends requests, News, Games, Dating, Watch, Today In, and can also mute notifications for those tabs.
Facebook confirmed that the settings of the shortcut bar are now deployed to all users, and most iOS users have access to features, which is supposed to reach all Android users in the next few weeks.
A spokesman for the company: We are introducing controls in the navigation bar to make it easier for people to communicate with the things they want and control the notifications they receive within the Facebook application.
The two new options are in a menu that appears when a user presses and holds an application icon in the shortcut bar, so users see two new options: “Remove from shortcut bar” and “Turn off alert points”.
If you use the app but don't want to see alert points, you can select the 'Turn off alert points' option to get rid of them, and you'll still be able to open the app by clicking on it, but without getting red dots on it when you post something new.
