Facebook has come under heavy criticism in recent years for its lax approach to fake news reports, state-backed disinformation campaigns and violent content on its services, prompting calls for new laws around the world.

In a speech at Georgetown University, Mark Zuckerberg's message was not to break up Facebook or we would not be able to defeat China, believing Facebook was the Internet.

Mark Zuckerberg attacked China's fast-growing TikTok application, saying the video platform had been censored by political protests, including in the United States, a charge the company denies.

Zuckerberg closed the door to China in March, when he announced his plan to direct Facebook to more private communications and pledged not to build data centers in countries with a record of human rights abuses such as privacy or freedom of expression.

He reiterated his concern about data centers in his speech at Georgetown University, this time with the naming of China specifically.

`` I wanted our services to be in China because I believe in connecting the whole world and I thought we might help create a more open society, and I worked hard to do it, but we couldn't reach an agreement on what it takes for us to work there, and they didn't let us in, '' Zuckerberg said.

Mark Zuckerberg that China is building its own version of the Internet, warning that it is now competing with the United States to export its version to foreign countries.

The CEO of the company sought to find common interests with his American audience, saying: You may not like Facebook, but at least not a Chinese producer.

Zuckerberg argued that we need to save the Internet from Chinese influence by not breaking up Facebook, otherwise we will not be able to defeat China.
